Born from the ashes of the blackened death metal cult Maveth, PROSCRIPTION is the brainchild of Christbutcher, a longtime figure in the underground and a veteran of the early Colorado metal scene (Excommunion, Dethroned [CO], session work with Nightbringer). After relocating to Finland, his unrelenting devotion to Death Metal found new form, channelling decades of experience into a singular force of abyssal aggression and spiritual violence. Where Maveth navigated the darker, blackened paths, Proscription expands the vision—delving deeper into the abyss with a sound that’s more violent, primal, and suffocatingly dark.
Though the lineage is unmistakable, Proscription has carved a distinct identity. From the serpentine leads of Cruciatus to the possessed howls of Apep, and the unrelenting, precision drumming of M.K., the band channels chaos with clarity, summoning a sound both bestial and refined.
In 2025, a significant line-up shift saw Cruciatus step down to focus on his main project Lantern, making way for long-time ally and elite producer Kalle Laanto of Sonic Violence Studios. His arrival brings a new surge of energy—his roots in violent death/thrash injecting raw fire into the band’s evolving sound. Already, new material has emerged, steeped in the band’s signature void-worship yet sharpened with Kalle’s own spectral touch.
Though Proscription is a relatively new name, its members are veterans of the underground. The band has brought its sonic rituals to stages across Finland and beyond, appearing at homeland and international festivals and embarking on a European tour. Each live appearance is a fierce and focused invocation—more ceremony than concert—proving Proscription’s vision transcends the studio and takes form in flesh and flame.
Their debut album “Conduit”, released by U.S. juggernauts Dark Descent Records, caused immediate waves—its first pressings on both CD and vinyl selling out swiftly, with the special edition vinyl sold out on pre-order before release!. Proscription’s impact was undeniable: Dark Descent Records broke their oath of not signing new bands at the time, just to get Proscription on board with them.
With their highly anticipated sophomore full-length “Desolate Divine” that was unleashed in autumn 2025, Proscription stands poised to deepen its mark—a conduit for something ancient, malignant, and divine.
