Formed in late 1987 by Óscar Clorio under the name Damned Cross, the band debuted with the demos “Soldiers of Wotan” (1988) and “Excretion of Infected Corpses” (1989). After evolving in sound and lineup, they became Cenotaph and released “Rise of Excruciation” (1989), a dark and raw death metal demo that earned them recognition across the underground scene.
Their 1990 EP “Tenebrous Apparitions” was later reissued by Baphomet Records in 1991, along with “The Eternal Disgrace”, further refining their sound. A year later came their debut album “The Gloomy Reflection of Our Hidden Sorrows”, a landmark in Latin American death metal for its intensity and conceptual depth beyond gore themes.
In 1994, they released Riding Our Black Oceans (Cyber Music, Netherlands), followed by Epic Rites (1996), after which the band relocated to Chicago, performing at the Milwaukee Death Metal Fest and several U.S. shows.
They band went on a hiatus, but reunited in 2018, performing at Netherlands Death Fest IV (2019) and delivering a historic double performance at Circo Volador in Mexico City.
In November and December last year, they headlined their first Asian and Australian tour, “Tenebrous Apparitions Across Asia & Australia Tour 2025”.
Now in 2026, Cenotaph continues to forge ahead, finalizing their upcoming album and preparing for their next European run, which includes this performance at Kill-Town Death Fest XI!
